A licensed practical nurse (LPN) provides custodial and skilled care in various settings. Licensed practical nurses may also be referred to as licensed vocational nurses (LVNs).
LPNs are directly involved in their patient's care. They're responsible for not only giving care but for overseeing the progress and status of their patients. These nurses work under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs).
Licensed practical nurses are also often responsible for communicating with their patients' families. They serve as a direct link between patients, families, and the health team.
Common tasks for a licensed practical nurse include:
- Recording and monitoring their patient's progress
- Helping with activities of daily living
- Administering medications
