Continence is an individual's ability to control their bowel and bladder function. When unable to maintain control of bowel or bladder function, it can refer to the ability to perform associated personal hygiene (including caring for a catheter or colostomy bag).  

 

Continence is also one of the six activities of daily living used to trigger Long-Term Care Insurance benefits.
