Do you always eat the way you should? Probably, not always. As we get older, our bodies needs for nutrients and minerals change. Doctors say it is best to get the nutrients you need from food instead of a pill. Nutrient-dense foods contain other things that are good for your overall health, like fiber.

We all need to eat better, but for older family members, it is even more critical. Helping older family members learn to eat better will ensure better overall health and well-being.

Generally, most older people can get all the nutrients they need from the foods they eat. However, often older people will not eat what they should, or their bodies need additional help to get the vitamins and minerals they need.

Declining Health and Aging Means Good Nutrition Essential

Healthy dietary choices help our bodies work the way they should. The right food choices will help us feel better and give us the energy to stay active. As we get older, this becomes even more important as we experience declining health and our bodies tend to deteriorate with aging.

The better food we eat, the lower the risk of developing health conditions that are common among older adults, including our risk of needing long-term health care services

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has a tool that helps you and your older family members make better food decisions. The FDA's Nutrition Facts label appears on packaged foods and beverages.

The National Council on Aging says the definition of eating healthy changes as you get older. For example, metabolism slows down as we age, meaning we require fewer calories than when we were younger. Our bodies, when we are older, require fewer calories than before.

You and your family may need to change how you eat or drink as you get older. Be sure to pay attention to how older family members eat as well. These changes in your food and beverage choices will help you achieve a healthy eating pattern.

Preparing for the changes we will face as we get older starts well before you get old. You plan your retirement before you retire. Seeing your doctor and paying attention to your health and fitness should be part of your normal routine annually after age 40.

Include a plan for the future costs and burdens of aging as part of your overall retirement plan. Be sure you have a way to fund quality care options when you need long-term care services.

Older family members who already have declining health may require assistance with daily activities. Home health aides can not only provide the required care services, but they also can make sure older family members are eating correctly.
