What Does 'Substantial Assistance' Mean?

Tax-qualified Long-Term Care policies require a policyholder to need "substantial assistance" in performing at least two activities of daily living in order to receive benefits.

Substantial assistance is defined as needing help performing at least two activities of daily living. It's also defined as needing either hands-on assistance or standby assistance. 

 

Policyholders must have a substantial need for assistance to start receiving benefits from their tax-qualified Long-Term Care Insurance policy.
