Alzheimer's is an incurable disease that progresses with time and age. This disease slowly destroys the memory and mental ability of the affected individual. The National Center for Biotechnology Information estimates about 6.2 million people are living with Alzheimer's in the U.S.
Alzheimer's typically develops in individuals aged 60 and older, although sometimes it develops sooner. This disease may start mild but worsens with age. Eventually, it results in a major loss of independent functioning.
Many people with Alzheimer's may be a danger to themselves or others. For this reason, many need long-term care support and supervision. Almost everyone with Alzheimer's will need long-term care at some point in their lives.
